CAROLINA ASIA CENTER Print Email

Established in 2002 in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Carolina Asia Center (CAC) promotes and strengthens Asian studies and activities at Carolina. The Center focuses on: cutting-edge research, innovative teaching and the development of strategic partnerships. The CAC works with partner organizations to coordinate Carolina's broad Asian studies agenda, facilitating multidisciplinary approaches to Asian Studies, embedding Asian languages and area studies in the curriculum, and enhancing the Carolina student's experience of Asia. The CAC also provides administrative support for the North Carolina Center for South Asian Studies.

The CAC seeks to promote inter-disciplinary research of Asian history, languages, societies and cultures by Carolina faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in such areas as Asian modernities, the environment, urban studies, regionalization and nationalism, history and memory, media, arts and culture, gender, production, migration and global work, intercultural communication, economic development and human rights discourses.

RESEARCH & TEACHING

The Grier-Woods Presbyterian China Initiative supports research fellowships for two faculty members each year, provides two to three travel awards research in China and a fund to support Asia-related research groups for College faculty.

The Center also provides funding support for Course Development, Faculty Research and Faculty Travel to East, Southeast and South Asia.

OUTREACH

The Carolina Asia Center supports public outreach through Academic Enrichment Funds which provide funding for activities organized by both faculty and students, such as lectures, films, film series, public talks, drama, readings, musical events or art exhibits which enhance Asia content across the undergraduate program. The CAC also supports a range of Asia-related student associations to enrich their activities.

VISITING SCHOLARS

The Center regularly accepts visiting scholars from Asia for one to two semesters at UNC.
