UNC's Study Abroad Office provides access to a wide portfolio of educational opportunities abroad that reflect and support the intellectual, financial and cultural needs of our diverse student body. Participation in a study abroad program encourages the exchange of knowledge and understanding and promotes enlightened and responsible citizenship and leadership. Such experiences have the potential to make students more open, thoughtful and competitive in an increasingly global and cosmopolitan world. All programs are approved for the award of UNC credit and students may apply their financial aid to a study abroad program. The Office offers approximately 328 programs in more than 70 countries. In academic year 2008-09, it assisted 1,281 students to study abroad.

KEY PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

The Study Abroad Office in the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill offers three types of academic program to undergraduate students:

  • UNC faculty-led programs that are organized and administered by the Study Abroad Office or organized by the Honors Program and the Institute for the Environment and made available to students by the Study Abroad Office;
  • Student exchange programs, resulting from an agreement with a foreign university to exchange students who continue to pay tuition to their home institution (including the College’s strategic partnerships with the National University of Singapore and King’s College, London);
  • Programs sponsored, organized and administered by other universities, colleges or non-profit/for-profit educational organizations that create and manage educational programs abroad to U.S. students.

All programs are approved for the award of UNC credit by the Administrative Board of the College of Arts and Sciences. All programs are offered in accordance with the University's Travel Policy.
